I just got two gliders 5 days ago, a male and a female. They have been together for a while and I think she is pregnant. It looks like there are two small lumps on her tummy. She is quite chubby, like almost twice the size of him. Is this normal? Do pregnant gliders always gain weight when they are pregnant? Or should I be worried. We have just started to bond with them and get used to having them around, so I'm a little nervous about her having babies.
Also, besides making sure that her diet is proper, is there anything else I should be looking for or be aware of?
I would just be careful, sounds like she it preggers. Some gliders are over weight. Read about rejection and cannabalization. Try and keep the stress down. Read, read, read, is my best advice.
I think with pregnant mothers a little extra weight is a good thing, the hard slog for suggies is the long nursing and weaning period.
I change nothing for mums expecting joeys, some people lower pouches and take away wheels, but I don't think it's necessary, I've never had any issues what so ever. Some people will also remove a pouch to force the mum to stay with the joeys, I think this is detrimental as they need to get away sometimes.
Handle mum with care, rough handling (I'm not saying you're rough though), can dislodge the joey from the nipple which risks injury to joey and mum.
As you said, make sure the diet is good and do lots of research.
