Hi,
I am new here but I have had gliders for about 2 years now.  My male and female finally bred and I just noticed today that there are babies in her pouch!  YAY!

Anyway, although I have had young gliders before, I have never had brand spankin new gliders and wasn't sure what to do.  I have not seen any joeys come oop yet but her pouch opening is wider and I can see at least one in there.  I am worried about when they do get oop...will they get out of the cage?  I have a large cage right now... (5' tall by 3' long by 2' wide), and the spaces between the bars are about 1/2".  There are 2 places where the space is about 3/4" (right above the 2 doors).  I am worried that once the joeys are oop, that they will go between the bars.  Will they be that small?  Should i find a different enclosure until they are larger?  I am unsure of what to do at this point.  Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kristen

hey, they should be alright in their cage. one of my cages is the about same measurement and neither of the joeys from my pair got out, or even attempted it. if you notice them coming out or trying to get out above the door you can probably put something there to prevent that. a piece of plastic canvas and a couple of zipties would work great.i hope this helps a little. christy

thanks!  i actually got to see them really well inside the pouch last night.  they were sticking their little tails and feet out.  after seeing a bit of them last night, i think they will probably be okay and not be able to get out.  they are kind of big already.  i have no idea how old they are but they havent come out of the pouch yet (that i have seen anyway).  they still have no fur but are larger than i would have thought.

anyway, thanks again for answering my question!

Hi, I think suggieluv answered your question and concern already. But please keep us updated on the joeys, and if you need anything at all, just send me a PM!

Nice big cage, I would usually recommend bar spacing be no more than 12mm.  Both myself and a friend of mine watched one of my fully weaned joeys (so 3 month OOP at least) squeeze through a gap that was 15mm - it was wider than the rest because it was around a sliding door so you do need to be aware of larger gaps!  Most of my joeys don't bother, but you do occasionally get a particularly adventurous one that likes to explore beyond the cage!

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, I'm an experienced breeder so should be able to help
