When I went to feed my gliders tonight I noticed a little pink baby hanging out of my females pouch.  I knew she was having twins but didn't expect to see that.  I put fleece down on the bottom of the cage and watched as the baby fell off of her.  She left it and went on her way.  After about 15 min. the baby had been crying and she never came back.  I tried to put the baby near her but neither her nor the dad seemed interested in him and he was very cold.  I wrapped him in a blanket and set it on a heating pad to warm him.  When I went back the other baby was on the bottom of the cage.  I picked him up and wrapped him up with the other.  What should I do now?  They are so small and have no hair at all.  Their tail and legs are formed and they are big enough to crawl around a little.  Are they too little to be saved?   Is there any chance the mom will take them back?  BTW, this is not the parents first litter.  I was not the owner before so I'm new to this.

They can be saved, but it will take a lot of time and effort.
It sounds like the mother is rejecting them for some reason.

but they do need immediate care.

premie joeys require constant food, so you need to be feeding them roughly every half hour.

It's not going to be easy saving the joey at this early stage, to be honest, your chances are very slim.  It's not so bad once they are out of pouch and when they are fully developed (except for the eyes still being closed).  Good luck though, and I sincerely hope you succeed, let us know how you get on.

Sadly one of them died last night.  He was the one that was out first and he was really cold when I got him out of the cage.  He wouldn't eat anything.  The second one I fed and warmed last night and early this morning put him back in the cage hoping his mom would take him back.  I don't see him in the cage this morning and he was climbing on her when I left him.  I'm not sure if she will take him back or will likely reject him again if she hasn't already.  What would cause them both to come off?  I haven't handled her since finding out she had twins in her pouch.  She still seems scared (I don't think the previous owner was good to them, she basically used them for breeding and sold them to me because "they were no longer a breeding pair") and I didn't want to stress her.  I have them on the BML diet and they get plenty of fruits, vegs, and meal worms.  We will be getting the male neutered to prevent this from happening again.

Getting the male neutered is the most responsible thing, it may not happen again, but it may, there's just no telling I'm afraid.  It could be that the mum didn't produce enough milk due to poor diet previously, how long have you had them?  The stress of moving homes can often cause rejection.  Please don't be surprised if the remaining joey disappears, sadly this is all too common with captive gliders and one of the reasons I never recommend a breeding pair for beginners.  It can be quite shocking!  Fingers crossed the little one finds her/his way back to the pouch and is ok.

We have had them a few months.  I'm praying that the mom takes the one back but I'm not really counting on it.  The baby must be with her now but I'm not sure it's in her pouch.  I will have to wait until she wakes up tonight see since she is in a fleece pouch in her house.

At that early stage, the joey should be in her pouch, it's too young to be out yet.

Could it have gone back in?
