Neutered males and females are the best pair you should get. If you are only getting one, DEFINITELY get a neutered male. They are so much sweeter (in my opinion) and you don't have to worry about heat cycles with them. All Gliders will urinate and defecate upon waking up, but once they are out and about they are fine. =)

Sugar gliders ARE stinky. Don't let anyone tell you they aren't. However, you have to be very driven & proactive to keep that smell under control. It can get out of control fast in you don't. With regular cleaning, a investment in a air purifier, you should be able to cut down on their smell a lot. Some people find their smell very offense and can't stand to be around them, but I don't mind their smell when its under control.

I'm glad you've had mice, because now I can tell you they smell more than mice and you will have an idea of what I'm talking about.

DewDropPony,
You should not be using any kind of odor neutralizer or air freshener to get rid of Sugar Glider odors. It is very unhealthy to expose your Sugar Gliders to the smells that an air freshener produces. I have never noticed a distinct smell with my Sugar Glider colony as I regularly clean cages, and make sure everything is tidy. If yours smell it might be because you are feeding them a poor diet or they aren't getting the necessary nutrients they require.
Thanks.
Lauren

Before you criticise someone, be knowledgable about what they are talking about first. DewDropPony said  air purifier not an air freshener or odor neutralizer!

Air purifiers are very good and safe for removing the following

  • Dust Mites

  • Mould spores

  • Pet Allergens

  • Chemicals (Volatile Organic Compounds)

  • Pollens from grasses, weeds, flowers and trees.

  • Smoke

  • Odours

  • Bacteria, Viruses

Not sure how effective they are with glider odours but they are very good for allergens and pollens in the air.
