Hi im relativly new to sugar gliders! i brought a male and female breeding pair for $200 dollars Aus... For the first week i kept them in a small bird cage while deciding what sort of cage to buy for them...
I had little money and didnt want to spend hundreds of dollars on an enclosure... In the end i brought a second hand wardrobe.. took of the door and one of the sides and replaced it with some wire mesh which cost me around $20 including the nails to secure the mesh.. ive hung some branches and put some small plants in the bottom... So all up i have an enclosure which cost me no more than $50
They love it!!!! There is plenty of room to run and jump around... They have their own corner out of view where i have put their breeding box and around nine at night they come out for a feed and then have a play...

Ill post some pictures as soon as i can for people to see!!!

That is a really COOL idea!! The only thing I wonder about is the smell? With a male marking territory and the wardrobe being made from wood, does it hold the smell? I was thinking if you poly'd it with a bunch of coats first, that would take care of that, plus it would make it easier to clean. GREAT idea though.

Would coating the wood with poly or some other varnish sealer become an issue with these guys. I am very new with gliders, but I used to breed chinchillas and they ate through anything they could get their teeth on.

Great idea, love it! Suggest not to use any stains, coatings or paint as my two definately chew on things. I have an open, smaller wire cage inside a small closet that has a window. There are 2 shelves, plus I put in 2 large branches & one thick rope wound around for them to climb on. But have found knaw marks on walls, etc. I clean w/tea tree oil, also called melaleuca (smells like eucalyptus)all natural, no chemicals, it is very strong, just a few drops in water to clean cage & closet. First I rinse with hot water, rinse w/tea tree oil & water, rinse again with plain water & put fresh natural bedding in bottom of cage (comes in bags, brownish-gray color) & closet that helps absorb urine, droppings & odor. Thanks for info & pics! We need to move gliders out of closet & I saw how expensive the larger cages are.

hey, great idea looks really good im thinking of doing the same thing just with old kitchin cupboards and staking them together and cut round holes in the sides so they can enter each cupboard so its like a house for them with a plastic wire mesh on the front. do you think that would be safe for them?

:)
