I am coming to the experts...This is just awful and I'm really hoping you can help us out...I have had my gliders for a couple of years now with very little to no trouble at all. Started with one male and female.. . they have been very happy and amourous and had 6 litters. I now have one male offspring and one female offspring left. I have the father and son housed together, and the two females togther. (To keep from having way too many to handle.) We have had no problems until we had to move our house a week ago and I had to keep them all together during the travel. As soon as we got to the new place I separated them again into their same cages.
I noticed that the mom had a large chewed spot on her left shoulder. During the move the alpha male (amourous of course) was all over her. She is missing a good inch of fur and skin down to the muscle. It's just awful. On top of that, I saw that the tip of the other females tail was gone-bone showing. (Sigh.) Since I have put the females back in their own cage a week ago the mom is looking better-the woundseems to be healing. But the younger female now has only half a tail! (Again this is just breaking my heart.) I'm sure it won't grow back, but I can't understand why it is getting worse and I don't know what to do.
Any suggestions that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I only have the two cages so separating the girls means buying another cage. (Which I would definately do if you think that would work!) I just can't understand why this would happen all of a sudden. I haven't changed their diet and they were just fine living together before the move. *Do I need to provide any medications for either of them? Their wounds are pretty raw, and I don't want to hurt them worse than they are.
**Also, I'm new to the area and don't have a vet here. In Norfolk VA so if any of you know of one that is familiar with gliders-please feel free to pass on their contact info.
Thanks in advance for your help...Frantic in VA!
