I have two new joeys... they are about 7 weeks OOP. One of the joeys has had matted fur on its back for a while now, and I tried to clean its fur with a warm washcloth, thinking that it wasn't getting well groomed by the parents. Well tonight I noticed that this joey has lost all of its fur on it's belly! The joey is still running around the cage and is eating, but I am worried what the extreme loss of fur could mean??? I am planning on taking it to the vet, but where I live, the vets do not know much about sugar gliders. I am hoping that someone here can give me some direction on what to do. Thanks
This is purely speculation:
Are you feeding the glider Glideraid & calcium supplements? If not do so ASAP. Is the glider stressed? Loud stereos, TVs, lights on @ night could all result in stress which could result in hair loss (it does for me!) I would review your gliders diet and make sure that you are giving him a variety of fruits/vegetables/baby foods/pellets/supplements/etc.
Please keep us updated as this is the 1st time I have heard of a glider loosing a lot of hair... Finding the cause could help glider owners that have this problem in the future. I find it interesting that only one of the joeys is loosing hair. Could he have fallen into any liquids/gels/chemicals in the house?
