Hey everyone....i just have one quick question. i have had my sugar glider for quite a while, and her nails have gotten extremely long. i have heard to put sandpaper around the outside of a wheel and whatnot, but i was just curious if anyone else had some ideas on what to do about her nails. they are just so long they get in the way, and the are starting to curl. is it easier to have them cut somewhere or does anyone have any good ways to cut them yourself? just wondering? i would appreciate some advice. thanks!
Some gliders don't like to be held tightly so clipping their nails can be difficult. There is an exercise wheel (Wodent wheel) on the market that has a sandpaper like insert that you can attach and remove after the nails have been shortened (Nail-o-matic). User comments indicate that it only has to be used for a couple of nights each time the nails get long. See http://www.transoniq.com/ for more info.
WARNING !! The solution below could be dangerous for your glider!!
Someone I know choose to create their own wheel solution so her glider could continue to climb walls - which takes slightly long nails.
She has a nice mesh wheel and purchased very very fine waterproof sandpaper (1500 grit) and attached it to the outside of her mesh wheel.
Note: I do not know if this is toxic if ingested. There are no warnings on the sandpaper, but most fine grit paper contains silicon carbide. Review http://www.newportglass.com/amssilcb.htm for the material safety data sheet on silicon carbide before using this method.
