hey everyone. got yet another question for you (i know pain in the butt!) lol. the winter over here gets really cold and im worried my glider might get cold. ive been keeping the heating on for him but me my partner and our bearded collie are getting far too hot. i was just wondering as an alternative to the central heating would a heat mat under his cage be suitable or just plain stupid?
I don't believe it will be bad, It is even said that they to use a heating pad in the beginning or atleast to have the temperature 72 or above.
My own experiences with it... I will wake up in the mornings to find Cokey sleeping in the heating pad.. I used an old shirt to cover it and place it at the bottom of the cage..
Cokey finds a way to get into between the shirt and the heating pad and sleeps there instead of his hanging pouch. Though, this were the first time he ever crab at me when reaching into his cage the very first time to check he was okay after the first nite. it startled me at first b/c he has never done that... which he crab at me the following nite. I finally ended getting a heater for my room and it keeps the room warmed throughout the day and night.
My only concern is that the heating pad is only on for two hours and I am afraid that he will just sleep with the heating pad even after it has turned off after two hours and be exposed to the cold rather than snuggling in his pouch.
Especially now that winter is coming along in Indiana.
Heating pads are NOT a good idea in a cage. Those that suggest using them are mill breeders and could care less if your glider is healthy and safe. A glider can chew on a heating pad or chew on the cord - the heating pad could malfunction and cause a burn to the glider's skin, etc, etc. The forums are full of stories of injury from heating pads. Please do not use one. EVER.
Keep your home between 65-80 and use a cage cover on the cage (safe fleece or cotton only - no towels). Make sure that winter sleeping pouches are double lined fleece and that you provide plenty of fleece blankies and your suggie will be fine.
