My SG, Sydney, is bonding with me very well, it seems. Just today, when I went to say hi to her in her cage after she woke up, she seemed happy to see me. I put my hand in her cage and started petting her, and she started licking me. Then, she started to bite really hard continuoulsy. Whenever I "psst!" at her, it is only a slight distraction, and she continues biting, and it almost seems harder! She hasn't broken skin, yet, but I want to know if she's just grooming me, or if she has a problem with how I'm saying hello to her. She seems to really get into it, she'll put a hand on my finger and crawl onto me, leaving her back legs on the cage ground. I've put honey on my finger and let her lick it off, and she was happy about the honey but she eventually started biting again! What do I do?
Hi! I just got two gliders. They are about a year old. They do some "crabbing" sometimes, but haven't bitten me yet! I'm trying hard to bond with them and find them very friendly at times!
My one glider, Bindee, likes to lick things off my fingers (applesauce, yogurt, honey, etc.) But she thinks that fingers are food sometimes...ending up nibbling at them. Is that what maybe Sydney is doing? Associating your fingers with food and getting confused?
One thing to keep in mind is that you never let them lick it all off. Just a few licks, then reload your finger.
Also, make sure that you have completely wash off any remnants of whatever your giving them as licky treats so that your fingers dont smell or taste like the treat when your done.
Gliders are also are very smell orientated. Lotions, soaps and perfumes can also trigger them to want to bite or nibble at you as well.
I've been very careful with what I give her, but she bites everyone! She'll climb on you and then bite you! But it's not aggressive, she love to run up to people and jump on them, and climb onto peoples hands and run around!
