Hi. I have a male glider (approximately 5 mths old) and female (10-12mths old). They get along beautifully and have been housed together for about 3 mths. I had female first and then introduced male. They always sleep in same pouch. Today during day when I took them out to play, I noticed that male had his private part out. Does that mean that both of them are sexually mature and were mating? I have read what it looks like when mating and have never seen that. My only concern is , I still do not see a bald spot on the head of my male.. is it dangerous for them to mate too soon? Should I be worried?
Sugarbear,
I know that this was posted a while ago, but nobody has replied yet and I figured it is an important question to address. Male Sugar Gliders tend to reach sexual maturity between 3-6 months of age, whereas females usually take a bit longer, being somewhere between 10-12 months of age. They usually mate very early in the morning, or incredibly late at night... and it is typically best observed by the male mounting the female and gently (sometimes even roughly) biting on to her neck (to hold on), this is what mating looks like... I will try to grab a few pictures. I wouldn't worry, he should be sexually mature... maybe just not scenting so much, which is why the bald spot isn't so prominent.
